OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Coordinates clinical and educational activities for department. Provides consultations and serves as a clinical and educational resource.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Evaluates, identifies and makes changes in daily nursing activities, which include implementing appropriate staffing between services, use of resources and materials, priority setting and patient services to enhance the services within the department.
  2. Motivates, supports, and provides feedback to staff. Conducts staff and shift meetings and communicates feedback to Director and Clinical Manager.
  3. Supervises nursing and ancillary staff, including hiring recommendations, orienting, training, counseling, evaluating and discharging as per hospital policy and procedures.
  4. Establishes necessary staff work schedules and assignments to ensure proper staffing for department needs. Works closely with scheduling to evaluate, identify, and make scheduling changes to enhance services.
    Works closely with Education Coordinator to assist with orientation of new employees, certification, student affiliation and any other employee inservice issues.
  5. Participates in the unit Quality Improvement activities and reviews quality/risk management issues daily, reporting appropriately with other departments.
  6. Researches, develops and implements projects as assigned.
  7. Complies with hospital and professional licensure, certification, inservice and training requirements and committee and conference participation as required for position.
  8. Interprets and communicates hospital and division philosophy, policies, procedures, and established standards of care and practice.
  9. Assists in the development of departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  10. Maintains adequate supplies, equipment, etc. for operations of unit/department. Makes appropriate recommendations, assists, and develops the operational and capital budgets.
  11. Coordinates admissions and discharges. Serves as a communication liaison between patients, families, staff, and physicians, and reports critical consequences of actions taken to Manager.
  12. Uses leadership principles in initiating, prescribing, influencing, and facilitating changes for nursing practices.
  13. Uses nursing process to define patient and/or system problems and works collaboratively departmental and other hospital staff to outline and accomplish long and short-term solutions.
  14. Possesses a level of clinical and theoretical expertise in nursing in order to provide consultation to the health team members. Maintains familiarity with patient care issues related to medical problems, surgical procedures, and diagnostic studies and technical training in the use of equipment pertinent to area.
  15. Serves as departmental and/or Northside representative in working with local, regional, and/or state organization and programs related to medical services

REQUIRED

  1. Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  2. Five (5) years of experience in area of specialty.

PREFERRED

  1. B.S. degree in nursing or allied health field.
