Founded in 1995, the Department of Earth System Science provides quality education, along with research and teaching opportunities for students interested in the science of the Earth as a system. ESS faculty, researchers, and students conduct research in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemical cycles, and climate change. Home to members of the National Academies of Sciences, the department provides opportunities for students to learn from and work with recognized experts in the field. Over the last decade, the Department of Earth System Science has earned a reputation as one of the most influential academic departments in the nation devoted to studying the Earth as a system.


Your Role on the Team

The Department of Earth System Science in the School of Physical Sciences at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a PART-TIME, on-site Applications Programmer to work in the research group of Professor Michael Prather on global atmospheric modeling, particularly as applied to atmospheric composition and climate change.

The candidate will be expected to apply professional programming concepts for large scientific modeling projects, resolve a variety of programming design and implementation issues, and work on programming assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Additionally, the incumbent will execute scientific calculations on HPC clusters and prepares diagnostics.

Essential Functions (Key Responsibilities)
Plans, designs, develops, modifies, debugs and evaluates moderately complex software for functional areas. Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for moderately complex new systems and devises moderately complex algorithms. Performs scientific modeling with parallel simulations on HPC machines, including testing/debugging software. Applies effective programming security practices. 50%
Executes test plans. Develops conversion and system implementation plans and regularly creates and executes unit tests. Employs source code control techniques. Assists with successful configuration management. 40%
Gathers and analyzes data to prepare system and programming documentation. Assists with implementation of changes in development, maintenance and system standards and in the creation of software specifications. Regularly reports progress on projects. 10%


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of scientific modeling software.
  • Experience with common programming languages and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with massively parallel FORTRAN and netCDF programming. Ability to implement and debug code written by others on the team, as well as to write code to achieve specified goals for the numerical simulation or to deliver complex diagnostics of the simulation.
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 5-10 years Experience with massively parallel FORTRAN and netCDF programming. Ability to implement and debug code written by others on the team, as well as to write code to achieve specified goals for the numerical simulation or to deliver complex diagnostics of the simulation.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $30.56- $36.28 (Hourly).
