Department of Cancer Prevention and Control

The West Virginia University Cancer Institute is seeking applications for a Service Professor (open rank) non-tenure track in the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control. The administrative service component of this position would involve building the research infrastructure in population science to support the Cancer Institute in achieving eligibility to apply for NCI cancer center designation. The research component of this position will involve leading and/or collaborating on Cancer Institute related grants with a focus on cancer risk factors and rural cancer control. The service component of this position is characterized as the utilization of a faculty member's knowledge, skills, and expertise to benefit the department, unit, or community and advance the overarching mission of the School of Medicine as it strives to improve the health, education, and well-being of West Virginians and beyond. This opportunity offers the potential for creation of highly impactful research and programs in the areas of cancer risk factors, prevention, early detection, survivorship/quality of life, or rural health. The successful candidate would ideally have demonstrated success in population-based cancer research on grant-funded projects. Candidates with experience working in a collaborative, biomedical research setting, and record of extramural grant support are highly preferred.

The faculty member's academic appointment will reside in the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, WVU School of Medicine, WVU Cancer Institute. This position will report to Stephenie Kennedy-Rea, EdD, Chair of the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control.

Qualifications

Applicant must have:



  • A relevant doctoral degree or equivalent
  • A proven track record of sustained peer-reviewed funded research in cancer etiology, risk reduction, screening, early detection, and/or survival
  • Advanced expertise in research design and methodology
  • Candidates must have a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community needs and with key focal sites within communities such as healthcare practices, community centers, organizations, or neighborhoods.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in cancer and behavioral sciences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Evidence of mentoring experience


Responsibilities include:



  • Conducting research and/or leading research teams (40% of time)
  • Collaborating and mentoring residents, students, staff on cancer prevention and control projects including manuscript development, data analysis, IRB submissions, and study design
  • Writing and collaborating on grants to support 40% of the position
  • Coordinating research projects
  • Preparing manuscripts
  • Planning and assisting outcome studies
  • Coordinating collaborations between the WV Clinical and Translations Science Institute (CTSI), Cancer Institute, and other identified internal and external partners
  • Serving/leading departmental, school, and institutional committees
  • Service to West Virginia, the region, and the nation
  • Developing and/or organizing activities and resources to increase research capacity and expand scholarly activity within the department, school, and/or university
  • Serving as a liaison between the department, school, and/or university with respect to industry sponsored clinical trials
  • Preparing an intramural or extramural funding application for training, service provision, and/or research to benefit the department, school, and/or university.
  • Development, coordination, or expansion of continuing education programs, professional development programs, research programs, or clinical programs.
  • Programmatic development and/or leadership of mentorin
  • Organizing educational activities or events for school or community groups (e.g., educational table at a community event, local school STEM competition)
    * Assisting community groups or health agencies obtain funding for research, program evaluation and/or public health programs
    * Disseminating scholarly findings to the media (i.e., radio, television, printed media)
    * Delivery of clinical care to individuals or groups locally or around the state to expand access to specialty expertise of the provider.
