Data Architect/ Senior Data Architect

Inotiv
parental leave, paid time off, 401(k)
United States, Indiana, Indianapolis
Jul 15, 2025
We are seeking a seasoned Data Architect to help define and execute the vision for a modern, scalable, and governed data ecosystem. This individual will serve as a technical leader and strategic partner, driving enterprise data architecture decisions while remaining hands-on in building and optimizing key components of our data platform.
This is a hybrid role-you'll lead data architecture strategy across domains and systems, while also actively contributing to the delivery of data models, semantic layers, pipelines, and metadata frameworks. The ideal candidate brings both architectural depth and practical implementation experience, with a track record of translating complex business needs into efficient, maintainable data solutions.

Enterprise Data Architecture & Platform Design

  • Own and evolve the enterprise data architecture, ensuring it aligns with business strategy and analytics needs.
  • Lead the design of dimensional, normalized, and canonical data models to support analytical, operational, and real-time use cases.
  • Architect and prototype scalable data solutions using T-SQL, Microsoft Fabric Dataflows, Data Factory pipelines, Lakehouse Explorer, and Spark notebooks within the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem. Leverage OneLake, Delta Lake, and Power BI integration for seamless transitions from raw to curated data layers.
  • Define optimization strategies for query performance, compute usage, and storage efficiency across Fabric and Azure data services.
  • Create architectural standards, including naming conventions, documentation practices, data modeling patterns, and deployment workflows.
  • Lead the design and implementation of a centralized semantic model using Power BI datasets and Microsoft Fabric's semantic modeling capabilities, enabling governed, scalable, and reusable self-service analytics across the organization.

Metadata Management, Governance & Strategy

  • Partner with stakeholders across data, security, and compliance functions to define and initiate foundational data governance practices, including data quality standards, lineage tracking, cataloging, access controls, and lifecycle policies.
  • Champion best practices around metadata management and business glossary development.
  • Maintain architectural documentation, including system diagrams, data lineage, and integration blueprints.
  • Stay current on industry trends in cloud-native platforms, semantic modeling, and data governance-and bring fresh ideas to the table.

Cross-functional Collaboration & Enablement

  • Serve as a trusted partner to data engineers, BI developers, analysts, and business teams to ensure designs are actionable, scalable, and aligned with business needs.
  • Provide hands-on support in building and reviewing pipelines, transforming data sets, and validating data model implementations.
  • Facilitate design reviews, architecture working sessions, and data modeling workshops across teams.
  • Evangelize modern architecture patterns such as lakehouse, medallion architecture, and data mesh within the organization.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in a data architecture or senior-level data engineering role with significant architectural responsibility.
  • Proven expertise in designing and delivering data warehouses, lakehouses, and semantic models.
  • Hands-on skills with SQL, dbt, and/or Python for data modeling, transformation, and orchestration.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native data platforms (e.g., Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake).
  • Deep knowledge of data modeling techniques (dimensional, data vault, 3NF) and when to apply each.
  • Experience implementing data governance, metadata management, lineage, and compliance frameworks (GDPR, HIPAA, etc.).
  • Proficiency with modeling or architecture tools such as ER/Studio, dbt, or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Experience building semantic layers and integrating with Power BI, Tableau, or Looker.
  • Familiarity with Azure Data Services, including Azure Data Factory, Purview, Synapse, etc.
  • Certifications in architecture, governance, or cloud platforms (e.g., CDMP, Azure Solutions Architect).

Education & Certifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
