Job Description
- Develops and implements strategies to maximize the utilization of all equipment assets; leads capital expenditure justifications for new equipment, plant and/or property
- Tracks and analyzes equipment performance and downtime
- Manages continuous improvement of plant operations to optimize the facility's material flow
- Oversees the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles into all phases of production
- Reviews, approves and oversees the construction of all new capital projects and capital expenses
- Oversees all divisional safety action plans and ensures daily accountability
- Ensures that all company property and facilities are maintained properly
- Improves the return on assets through increased sales, lower total cost of material, reduced expenses and improved management of assets
- Ensures purchasing and materials management is implemented according to company policy
- Oversees development and implementation of purchasing strategies
- Supports relationships with key vendors and oversees pricing structure and response to key contract bids
- Supports the development and implementation of a long-range preventive maintenance program to ensure high equipment reliability; manages aged-inventory and turn-inventory in accordance with company objectives
- Ensures plant is operated in an environmentally responsible manner
- Establishes and maintains an organizational structure to effectively meet business objectives
- Monitors department workflow to ensure proper staffing levels and skills
- Motivates the workforce through effective communications, both formally and informally, regarding state-of-the-business, YTD results, division performance, key business issues, etc.
- Supports the implementation of company-wide programs designed to invite employee participation to motivate and recognize behavior in support of key business objectives
- Supports development and execution of organizational marketing and sales plans
- Ensures quality policy and practices relating to material application, testing, inspections and certifications are implemented according to company policies and procedures
- Ensures customer rejects, complaints and mill claims are investigated and effectively resolved to avoid/correct future claims/defects
- Supports the implementation of quality policies and measurements for outside processors
- Leads the annual business planning process
- Analyzes financial reports and financial trends
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or related experience
- 10+ years of management experience in a metal fabrication environment
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in successfully leading and managing a significant segment of a large manufacturer/processor or the entire operation of a small manufacturer/processor
- Working knowledge of business concepts: financial and operations management, purchasing and marketing/sales
- Strong strategic leadership skills and short/ long-term planning abilities, with the ability to lead teams and drive for results, with and through others
- Strong industry and product knowledge: trends, issues and emerging technologies in steel/steel service centers, product specifications, and steel processing services
- Strong customer service and relationship management skills
- Familiarity with ISO and/or QS 9000 quality management systems
- Familiarity with ISO14001 Environmental Management systems
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing techniques and Six Sigma
- Knowledge of inventory management, materials control (flow of material and parts in and out of the plant), production control (efficient production processes) and preventive maintenance
