Assistant Professor of Sociology

About the Position:The Department of Sociology at Western Washington University invites applications to fill a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin September 2010, pending budgetary approval. About the Department:The Sociology Department is comprised of twelve full-time faculty engaged in a wide range of research activities who often involve undergraduate students in their research.

The Department does not offer a master's degree. The Center for Social Science Instruction is housed within the Department, provides assistance to faculty and students with computing and statistical analysis. Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in sociological theory and research methods
  • Active engagement in scholarship, including scholarly publications
  • Active participation in service activities within the Department, University, and discipline
  • Active engagement in collaborative scholarship with undergraduates

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph. D in sociology anticipated by the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining an active program of research/scholarship and publication
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching undergraduate courses in sociological theory

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching undergraduate courses in research methods
  • Area specialization in family and/or life course studies
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and staff
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in collaborative research with undergraduates

Academic Emphasis:Sociology

Salary:Commensurate with experience and qualifications
