Job Description:
The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, Region 2 is recruiting for a seasonal Wildlife Biologist II position in our King Salmon office.
This position will assist the area wildlife management biologist and will be responsible for assisting with the planning, implementing, evaluating, and reporting of research and management activities on various animal species including brown bears, moose, caribou, and furbearers.
Additionally, this position will provide technical support on the management of animal populations and their habitat in Southwest Alaska. Currently this position will be funded for 6 months of the year. It is possible that this position will be extended to 11 months pending future funding.
The successful candidate will possess the following desired skills and abilities (These skills and abilities must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile. If you do not have experience with the items listed below please state that in your cover letter.
):
- An understanding of how to design and implement sound and practical wildlife management and research programs.
- The ability to monitor and evaluate wildlife populations. This includes logistical planning, low-level aircraft surveys, laboratory work, and field work.
- Be willing and able to capture and handle various wildlife species. Capture work will require low-level helicopter flight, entering and exiting helicopters in flight, and the ability to capture calves while sprinting over uneven ground.
- Experience analyzing scientific data and completing project summaries and reports.
- The ability to coordinate with staff from other state and federal agencies while working to resolve complex or controversial wildlife management problems.
- The ability to answer public inquires on complex issues or regulations through oral or written communication (i. e. , explaining trapping/hunting regulations, process for obtaining a hunting permit, public access, etc).
- Experience preparing informational materials (press releases, newsletters, brochures, slideshows, etc. ) and participating in oral presentations during public meetings.
- Experience working efficiently with little supervision. This includes the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time, and multitask.
- Computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint and ArcGIS.
- Experience with and exposure to firearms. The incumbent must be willing and able to use firearms in potentially dangerous situations involving large animals should the need arise.

Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management.
AND
One year of professional level biologist experience, specific to wildlife resource management or research activities. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist I, Fishery Biologist I, or Habitat Biologist I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college, which includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours in the fields listed above, of which 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours are course work bearing course numbers of 300 or higher.
There is no substitution for the required experience. A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management, will substitute for the required work experience.
